The mists of time have shrouded Australia's last Cup success at the Hong Kong Sevens. The five-time champions last tasted victory in 1988 when David Campese delighted the fans with his goosestep. It also won him the Best and Fairest player award. Since those heady days, Australia has struggled to field its best available side mainly due to losing players to the ranks of Super Rugby. They now use the series to nurture young stars. Australia won the Plate competition in 2010 in Hong Kong and reached the same final again last year before bowing out to South Africa 26-19. Their fans will hope 2012 will be a breakthrough year and that the strains of Waltzing Matilda will be heard at So Kon Po once again. |
