For many years the RFU declined invites to play at the Hong Kong Sevens. But with the advent of the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the inaugural event which England under captain Andrew Harriman surprisingly won in 1993, attitudes have changed and England are today one of the most well-backed and supported teams in the series with a core of talented stars fully contracted to the RFU. The Red Rose brigade considers Hong Kong as their second home and thrilled the fans when they went on a run of four consecutive Cup title beginning in 2002. With exceptional pace, England looked well set to make it five last year but lost to New Zealand in the final, 29-17. Coach Ben Ryan will hope his team can go one step further in 2012. |
