The Scots not only invented sevens - the first such tournament was hosted by Melrose RFC in 1883 - they are long-time supporters of the Hong Kong Sevens. The national team made their debut in Hong Kong in 1991 but, before that, Co-Optimists contested the waterlogged final in 1980 and Scottish Border Club reached the final two years later. As such it is no surprise that they have a faithful following in the stands at the Hong Kong Sevens. Scotland, reached the Plate final in three consecutive IRB Sevens tournaments in Hong Kong, losing to South Africa in 2002 and Canada in 2003 but beating France in a thrilling contest in 2004. They lost to Japan in the Bowl quarterfinals last year. |
