The Springbok Sevens have yet to taste ultimate success at the Hong Kong Sevens. Their best chance to break the duck in Hong Kong came in 2009 when they reached the Cup final only to lose a heart-breaking match to Fiji 26-24 in a pulsating final. Despite the setback in Hong Kong, South Africa would go on to take its first ever IRB World Sevens Series title in the same year. But it seems only a question of when, not if, South Africa will break through for their first win at So Kon Po. With players like Cecil Afrika in the squad, they will always be a danger and coach Paul Treu will be hoping that the team's Cup-drought in Hong Kong will end in 2012. South Africa defeated Australia 26-19 to win the Plate last year. |
