In 2012 the event saw the introduction of an innovative new format. The main competition involved the 12 core teams from the Series playing for valuable points towards the overall title. Alongside was a 12 team qualification competition that provided the top three teams with core team status for the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series.
The result being that the event was hailed as one of the best yet. Helped by glorious sunshine that bathed the always enthusiastic fans, the entertainment both off and on the pitch was world class with commentator Andy Nicol hailing the final as the best 20 minutes of rugby he's ever seen!
